Car speeds past 100 mph as Rankin County deputies work on drug enforcement

A Texas man is facing drug charges after a traffic stop in Rankin County. A Rankin County Sheriff’s Interstate Interdiction Unit deputy stopped a Chevy Tahoe around 8 a.m. Monday on Interstate 20 for a traffic violation, Sheriff Bryan Bailey said. The deputy sought and obtained consent to search the vehicle, where deputies found plastic bags hidden inside a seat, Bailey said. Bailey said the bags contained more than 3 pounds of pills, which tested positive for fentanyl. Deputies said the estimated market value of Fentanyl was around $250,000. The driver, Carlos Martinez, was arrested and charged with trafficking in controlled substances. As deputies investigated, a car accelerated to around 100 mph, Bailey said. One of the deputies chased the vehicle, which ended in a shootout and the suspect committed suicide, according to the sheriff.
