COUNCILOR Claudio Puentevella urged the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) to step up their campaign against illegal drugs during the MassKara festival celebration in October this year.

Puentevella said yesterday, September 22, that the BCPO led by its director, Col. Thomas Joseph Martir, should strictly enforce Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 to prevent the sale, use and the distribution of party drugs and other contraband during the festival.

He said the upcoming MassKara festival celebration would attract hundreds of visitors and tourists, which could provide drug dealers with a means to sell and distribute party drugs.

The intensified enforcement of RA 9165, he added, will prevent the proliferation of party drugs and other contraband during the festival, which harms the safety and well-being of young people and the general public.

The MassKara festival will be celebrated from October 1 to 23, 2022 after a two-year hiatus due to the ongoing coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

Puentevella also urged the BCPO as well as the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to step up enforcement of RA 10568 or the Anti-Drunk and Drug-Driving Act of 2013 during the upcoming festival.

Puentevella said that during the MassKara festival, many tourists and residents are expected to consume alcohol in various establishments in the city.

He said driving under the influence of alcohol and other intoxicated substances will impair driver perception and reduce their ability to judge the distance, speed and movement of other vehicles, which can lead to crashes. the road fatal, detrimental to the safety of the general public. *
