CEBU CITY, Philippines – The imminent establishment of a task force against the entry of illegal drugs into the Central Visayas will bolster the authorities’ existing interdiction efforts.

The task force will allow authorities to bring in local government units where selected personnel will be trained as force multipliers in interdiction measures, said Leia Alcantara, spokeswoman for the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency. in the Central Visayas (PDEA-7).

“…need gyud nato i-step up kay ato man gyud na giangkon kuwang man gyud ta sa personnel in order to kung mapun-an plus maintain a more secure unity of nato on all borders,” Alcantara said.

The task force will focus on intercepting the entry of illegal drugs, and Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia will serve as the task force’s drug czar or overseer.

It can be recalled that Garcia declared an “all-out war” against illegal drugs in September 2022.

Alcantara said the creation of this task force is another step in that direction given that Cebu has several seaports and airports that could be used as transshipment points.

Earlier, Police Col. Rommel Ochave, director of the Cebu Provincial Police Bureau, said the task force does not mean that illegal drugs are rampant in the area.

He said the move was simply to ensure that drug shipment is curtailed, given that the Central Visayas have multiple seaports and airports. /rcg
