MANILA — Officials said agents seized possibly the country’s biggest drug trade during a series of operations from Saturday afternoon through predawn Sunday in Metro Manila.
“This afternoon will be historic in our country. This is probably the biggest drug deal in the history of the Philippines… Halos isang toneladang droga (o) 990 kilograms of shabu, or about 6.7 billion pesos,” Interior Secretary Benhur said. Abalos said during a press conference at Camp Crame, Quezon City on Sunday afternoon.
Brig. Gen. Narciso Domingo, director of the Philippine National Police Drug Enforcement Group (PDEG), said the first buyout operation was conducted around 4:45 p.m. Saturday in Tondo.
This resulted in the arrest of a certain Ney Saligumba Atadero, 50, a resident of Ermita, Manila, and the discovery of 890 kilos and 102 grams worth 6.7 billion pesos.
A follow-up operation later led to the arrest of M/Sgt. Rodolfo Mayo, Jr. of PDEG, said Domingo. He was allegedly caught in possession of two kilos of alleged shabu worth 13.6 million pesos.
“Sabi ko nga noon, there will be no respite. It doesn’t matter who is caught and who is injured. As long as we have all the evidence against a suspect in any crime, we will pursue them until the end ,” said PNP leader General Rodolfo Azurin, Jr., when asked to comment on the involvement of a police personnel.
“We expect you to have pulis, na kasamahan pa sa PDEG, and a big breakthrough for inyong kapulisan, na ito is a halimbawa na we do not and will not tolerate any wrongdoing by any police officer under my supervision, and of course under the supervision of our DILG secretary,” he added.
The subsequent operation was carried out around 2:30 a.m. near the Quezon Bridge in the Quiapo area.
Another alleged cohort of the group identified as Juden Francisco was also arrested in Rosario, Pasig, Domingo said.
Abalos said the operations were carried out in accordance with President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s campaign against illegal drugs.
“Kaniyang’s instruction in PNP, DILG, important (na) makuha talaga yung mga malalaking ganito,” Abalos said.
