Implementation Council Hosts Drug Awareness Event for Schools

The Drogheda Implementation Council is organizing a drug and alcohol awareness event and an information event for education providers in the Drogheda region at primary, secondary and higher level on Wednesday 26 October from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Barbican Centre. The event follows a very successful event held in May 2022 and is organized by the Police and Drugs subgroup of the Drogheda Implementation Council.

he council was established late last year after the publication of the Geiran report on community safety and well-being in Drogheda. This report was a response to organized crime activities in the Drogheda region, often referred to as the “drug dispute”. A feature of this dispute was the participation of very young people and the impact of (bad) drug use on young people in our communities.

The May event brought together nearly 100 people from 19 different educational institutions in Drogheda and East Meath. The organizers have designed a speaker program based on feedback from this event with areas covered such as updates from An Garda Siochána; drug and alcohol abuse support for under 18s; youth services and supports; family supports and health and well-being. The aim of the event is to showcase the many services and resources available at Drogheda so that staff at educational institutions can feel informed when interacting with students and parents. Principals, Vice-Principals, Guidance Counsellors, TY Coordinators, SENs, Homeschool Community Liaisons, and other school staff who provide pastoral care are invited to attend the event. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with each other and refreshments will be provided.

If you are a school interested in participating or a community group interested in organizing a stand, please contact or go to The Drogheda Implementation Board is hosted by LMETB and supported by the Ministry of Justice.
