FAISALABAD – Healthy activities are imperative to steer young people away from drug addiction and in this regard, the government should devise a comprehensive strategy to engage young people in general and students in particular in recreational activities.

This was stated by Professor Dr. Akmal Sharif, Head of Medicines Department, Medina Teaching Hospital (MTH), University of Faisalabad. He was addressing a seminar on “International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking”, organized by Department of Community Medicine, University Medical & Dental College Faisalabad in collaboration with Anjuman-e-Insdade-e-Manshiaat and Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) Punjab, here on Monday.

He said drug abuse was one of the greatest threats to human health, with society as a whole bearing the consequences if the threat was not addressed.

He said drug abuse prevention was directly linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as good human health and societal well-being. “Therefore, we must collectively strive to control the threat of drug abuse so that a healthy and prosperous society can be developed,” he said and added that the main objective of observing the day was to raise awareness of the physical and psychological impact of drug abuse across the world. world.

Professor Imtiaz Ahmad Dogar, Head of Department of Psychiatry at Faisalabad Medical University and Faisalabad District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital, said that many forms of addiction were accessible to young people including digital addiction gaming, social media and cell phone addiction.

He said an addict would never call themselves an addict instead he would blame societal norms and culture for that.

Dr Imtiaz Dogar cited many recent examples of crimes committed by young people due to gambling addiction. -he stated and emphasized that it was completely curable although relapses were common.
