Addiction – Latest News – The Nation

A recent report from Lahore Police has revealed that 102 people have died from chronic drug addiction in Lahore since January 2022. The problem of drug addiction has arisen from various socio-economic hardships and health issues suffered by people mostly homeless. , although it is undeniable that such cases are also numerous in the upper strata of society. There is clearly a desire to put an end to this addiction problem, but it has to be done with a little humanity. These individuals are not criminals but victims of their situation.

Drug abuse has become so common, especially in urban centers like Lahore, that people of all ages can be seen crammed into different corners of the city engaging in this dangerous activity. Worryingly, injection drugs like sedatives, tranquilizers, heroin, opium and even crystal meth are widely used and have become quite popular. They are disseminated with such frequency that, according to the report, street children can also access them and easily engage in drug abuse. This is undeniably a social hazard for which the government must assume some responsibility.

Taking criminal action against these people is not only unnecessary but also counterproductive. More often than not, this proliferation of drug use is born out of the inability to cope with social challenges like mental illnesses and health problems. The report found that most drug users suffered from depression, HIV or hepatitis. This not only indicates that there are bigger issues facing the government – like providing free or subsidized health care and mental health awareness – but that treating them like criminals can do more harm. only good. Those who were taken into custody often committed suicide as they saw no way out of their already incredibly difficult lives.

The government cannot continue to neglect this phenomenon and continue to adopt a law and order approach in this regard. There is a need for more rehabilitation centers across the country. Currently, there is only one major drug rehabilitation center in Punjab and it is located in Multan. Detoxification, rehabilitation, education, aftercare and social integration are the basic services that should be offered to solve this problem. This should not be pursued as a war on drugs, but rather a human-centered and rehabilitative approach should be central to this strategy.
