40 million pesos of illegal drugs seized

MANILA, Philippines — Illegal drugs worth nearly 40 million pesos have been confiscated in Cebu City and Kalinga over the past two days, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).

The officer in charge of the PNP, Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr., said three kilos of shabu worth 20.4 million pesos were recovered from Mark Ronald Matig-a, who was killed yesterday during of a shootout with law enforcement in Cebu City.

Danao said Matig-a and his girlfriend June Tunacao were selling shabu to a policeman posing as a buyer in Barangay Careta when one of the suspects allegedly pulled out a KG-9 submachine gun when he felt he was dealing with an undercover agent.

A police officer was shot in the chest, but was not injured as he was wearing a bulletproof vest.

The other officers returned fire and shot Matig-a. Tunacao managed to escape.

“I congratulate our men in Central Visayas for another job well done in our intensified campaign against illicit drugs,” Danao said in a statement.

Authorities in Kalinga on Thursday uprooted and burned marijuana plants worth 19.5 million pesos in Tinglayan.

Brig. Gen. Randy Peralta, director of the PNP Drug Enforcement Group, said the marijuana plants were discovered during a raid in Barangays Loccong and Bugnay. No one was arrested during the operation.

In Bulacan, Jerryco Quiminales, 30, and Eliza Pardito were arrested during a sting at Barangay Muzon in San Jose del Monte City. The two reportedly brought home 75 grams of shabu worth 510,000 pesos.
