CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Police arrested an intelligence officer in the city of Misamis Oriental for allegedly transporting illegal drugs to the village of Agusan on April 2 at around 11 p.m.
The Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) identified the suspect as Corporal Jann Al Rey Balondo, an intelligence officer from the Kinoguitan Municipal Police Station.
In a telephone interview on Sunday, Lt. Theofratus Pia, spokesman for the Misamis Provincial Eastern Police Bureau, confirmed to the Manila Bulletin the arrest of the intelligence officer.
Operating officers from the City Intelligence Unit (CIU) here and the Puerto 6 Police Station conducted operations and detective patrols under Oplan Bakal Sita after receiving information about an individual carrying a weapon fire.
CIU chief Lt. Col. Jophet Paglinawan said in an interview on a radio station here the suspect was off duty and only visited the city.
Paglinawan said he also received reports that Balondo was also involved in drug trafficking in parts of the city.
“This person, we received a lot of information. He is one of the spearheads of drug trafficking in the villages of Agusan, Balubal and Puerto,” Paglinawan said.
Authorities recovered a sachet containing suspected shabu and a sachet from the suspect’s wallet containing traces of illicit drugs.
They also recovered a PNP (Philippine National Police) 9mm Glock pistol unit, a 9mm Glock magazine, nine rounds and drug paraphernalia.
Pia pointed out that they do not condone said activity as PNP has always been consistent in ridding PNP of scalawags.
In a separate interview on Sunday, Lt. Col. Michelle Olaivar, spokeswoman for the Northern Mindanao Regional Police Bureau (PRO-10), said the PNP has an Integrity Monitoring Group (IMEG ), which monitors every activity of police officers who have been reported to be involved in illegal activities.
“However, despite this kind of surveillance [IMEG]there are still brave police officers who don’t think and waste the opportunity to serve,” Olaivar said.
Olaivar added that the arrested police officer will undergo proper process and that the administration will coordinate with the suspect’s direct supervisor for further investigation.
“In the meantime, his direct supervisor will be asked to explain whether such conduct of said staff went unreported or why the staff were caught with illegal drugs and why the staff, who were not in service, was he carrying a gun and any other questions,” she added.
Balondo is currently being held at the Puerto 6 Police Station Detention Center.
