Drug addiction, known in society as the “white death”, is one of the most painful problems affecting all countries and nations, regardless of race, age or religion, and causes everything to happen. the world regards it as a disease without borders, global and terrible.

One of the important steps in tackling this global problem is to encourage awareness, especially among adolescents and young people.

Surprisingly, children and young people are the main victims of this evil, and the future not only of a country, but also of the world is in danger.

Global awareness

Many countries around the world have adopted national drug-free future programs to protect younger generations from this evil.

According to the adopted national programs, one of the main tasks of educational institutions and public organizations is to raise awareness and propaganda against drugs. This struggle is waged through the media, including the Internet.

Drugs, first of all, harm the health of the addict. Drug addiction leads to weakening of the body, weight loss and loss of physical strength. Poisoning of the body leads to poisoning of internal organs. The most common illnesses caused by drugs are hepatitis B, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

The most horrific aspect of drug use is that a person who uses drugs repeatedly becomes dependent and seeks opportunities to find and use drugs.

The United Nations declared June 26 the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in order to draw international attention to the world’s most dangerous drug problem.

National fight against drug addiction

Azerbaijan is also actively involved in raising public awareness and combating drug addiction. The country has launched national programs (2000-2006, 2013-2018, 2019-2024) to combat the spread of drugs and set up a special state commission to combat the problem. These steps should only be considered within the framework of the proactive policy led by the State in the fight against this terrible scourge.

After restoring its territorial integrity, Azerbaijan is taking measures to ensure security and restore order in the liberated lands. One of these measures is to stop the flow of drugs into the region which was previously controlled by an illegal Karabakh regime set up by Armenia.

During its 30 years of occupation of Azerbaijani territories, Armenia has used Karabakh and the seven adjacent regions for its illegal activities, including trafficking in arms and drugs. Although Azerbaijan has repeatedly raised the issue before international organizations, Armenia has continued in the same vein, creating all the necessary conditions there for the illegal cultivation, production and distribution of narcotic substances.

Various information sources previously reported that the safest route used by drug traffickers through Armenia and occupied Azerbaijani lands was Afghanistan-Iran-Armenia-Russia, Karabakh-Iran-Azerbaijan-Russia, Karabakh- Armenia-Russia, and the drugs were mainly transported from Russia. in Europe.

It should be noted that for more than 20 years, Azerbaijan has been engaged in the fight against the spread of drugs on the planet in close cooperation with the world and has supported three UN conventions on the prevention of trafficking drug.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 16 million people around the world inject drugs, and 3 million of them have AIDS.

According to official statistics, the number of drug addicts in Azerbaijan has increased tenfold in the past five years. According to the latest data, the official number of drug addicts in the country is around 30,000.

Azerbaijan is constantly improving its legal framework in the fight against drugs and drug trafficking to adapt it to the changing conditions and demands of the problem. At the same time, the country fights against drug trafficking at the level of the police.

One of the most effective ways to fight drug addiction is to identify addicts at an early stage and help them stop using drugs. It is considered to be an effective way to prevent people prone to drug addiction.

For this reason, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education have launched a campaign under the slogan “Say no to drugs” to identify students who are prone to using drugs or other psychotropic substances.

In addition, the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers has adopted drug treatment programs aimed at preventing the spread of HIV and AIDS among injecting drug users.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Health has established a voluntary consultation and examination center in the Republican Center of Narcology, which offers free consultations to people suffering from drug addiction and other related diseases.
